You can be happy with work without having friends at work. By friends I mean someone you spend time with when you are not working or at a work related event. That said most of my friends are people I met at work but I don't work with them now. Some of the people I work with now might become my friends. Mixing friendship and work can cause trouble just like romance and work don't mix.
