You did not mention the age of the children. Are the kids young enough that they won’t resent having there lifestyle and class being downgraded.

Personally if I was them and if the kids were good with it I would cash out the condo and such and open a kite (any eco-tourist thingy) shop in New Hampshire or Vermont. Live like a Hippy with minimal expenses and enjoy nature.

If they are city lovers and can’t imagine living in the Boondocks I would suggest that he could change his attitude about his job, yes, grit it out but knowing that he could survive and maybe even be happier if they fire him, he could stop doing the things that make his job “soul sucking.” Don’t like the hours, come and go when you want. Don’t like the after hours e-mails and texts, ignore them. For a while I negotiated with my employer that I would work half time for half pay. He ended up getting a great deal as I worked more than half time but I loved the freedom being able to come and go as I pleased with only a few hours of a few days being must be here times.

I retired when I got laid-off from what had become a toxic work environment. The environment got toxic because of the constant foreseeable layoffs as the business downsized. The back stabbing, relentless unreasonable demands for free overtime and constant employee reviews and layoff rankings.

Anyway, while I was glad to be out of that environment I missed the work. When the business turned around I when back to work for a company with a different environment and when I was hired I told the owner, I would work there as long as it was fun. When you are rich enough that you can turn the tables on your employer, be the one who sets the conditions of your employment it makes a great deal of difference.

Rich enough does not have to mean 10’s of millions of dollars unless you need to live a lifestyle of the rich and famous. I am assuming that anyone who makes that kind of money has valuable skills that are hard to replace.
