You probably should do more than think about this. Don't delay get you and your family age appropriate gun safety training. You all need that even if you don't get a gun. Don't just go buy a gun. Understand where and how you might use it as that will influence what firearm or firearms you will buy. Go to a shooting range and rent different guns and learn how to use them. Their is more to this process than I care to write.
