You seem to be well read so I a surprised you aren’t aware of all the criminal justice reforms that are going on. Even Trump was supporting one initiative.
The First Step Act would give federal judges more leeway when sentencing some drug offenders and boost prisoner rehabilitation efforts. It also would reduce life sentences for some drug offenders with three convictions, or “three strikes,” to 25 years. Another provision would allow about 2,600 federal prisoners sentenced for crack cocaine offenses before August 2010 the opportunity to petition for a reduced penalty.
California is closing for profit prisons, stop and frisk was stopped by the courts years ago. Drug Court diversion programs are getting more common.
The problem has been recognized and people are working to make the system better.
Locally we have two initiatives, one is to get better funding for public defenders and the other is to massively reduce bail and fines for the poor.
It is not right for you to blame everyone who might be indifferent to this problem. Many of them don’t have the luxury of time and energy to be spared from just surviving day to day.
Just because it is a big deal to you does not make it a top of the list item for everyone. It is not like we don’t have a plethora of problems.
You’d have to be living in a hole if you don’t know the name Kalief Browder because he became an international media sensation. He had the likes of Rosie O’Donnell and Jay Z backing him up.
No I had not heard about Kalief or if I did it did not make an impression but then again his case is not really that special, might even be consider common. More the reason I probably did not hear about it is I would deliberately avoid anything associated with Rosie O’Donnell and I had to do a search to make sure my understanding about Jay Z being a musician was correct, I turned up he is party to a lawsuit against a notorious Mississippi prison. I hope he wins. I have not followed musicians, sports or pop culture, not really anything that interests me. I mostly follow, business, science, tech, health and political news.
Racism is strong in the U.S. and not non-existent in Canada. Yes, our criminal justice system is one of the worst offenders. None of us have a magic wand to make it go away. You can keep an eye on our prisons for us while I keep and eye on the environment.
Glad to see delays on the new tar sands project now if we can stop the pipelines. You know the environment does not recognize national borders. Canada should stop cutting down trees and selling them to the U.S. Are Canadians still killing baby seals. Are they still locking up people who protest the slaughter. Is Canada’s per capita GHG emissions still higher than the U.S.
