1492 to 1776

In the early 16th century Europe started taking a serious interest in the America’s. It took almost three centuries for the America’s to be serious about forming their own independent countries. Half a century ago we demonstrated that we put people on the Moon. My cohort complain about our slow progress colonizing the Luna and our lackadaisical efforts to explore Mars. I think we are progressing at an appropriate pace.

How a Billionaire could make a postive difference right now.

Brazil has an aircraft carrier that needs to be recycled but nobody wants to do is because doing the job right is a losing proposition. A huge waste and potential environmental damage are looming. Maybe a billionaire could take possession of the ship and do the right things even if Brazil will not pay the piper. Tons of steel and copper are about to be sent to the bottom of the ocean because nobody will pay to properly deal with the hazardous materials so they will just dump the hazardous materials in the ocean.

It is time to punish this evil cartel.

It is simple. Just buy less products that are made from Oil. This is something we should have been trying to do all along and many of us are but now we have more reasons than ever. I am not going to list them all but just know that it…

The Algorithms are Stupid

The algorithms are either stupid or ignorant or both. Even here on Medium. Medium recommends to me stories I have already read. Other sites offer me products I already purchased. I mean things I only need one of. They repeatedly offer me stories, click bait, that I have ignored a hundred times. This business model is doomed. TEK

Clear Gold

I originally wrote this as a response to a Medium article on Climate change that said, “Water will be the new Gold.” It seems to me it is a worthy story on its own. Water will not be the new gold; it will be the new oil. Right now, oil…

Drunken ramblings

The lines on the map mean less than most people think. I have been following some back-and-forth criticism and support for the state of Maine. Most of the authors talk about Portland and south coastal Maine. That is really just Boston, extended. I have lived there and have lived in real Maine. They are different and there is not line on the map that defines the limits of Boston and where real Maine starts. Yeah, real Maine sucks unless you live there. It is just a different way of life. Few citified Yankees are going to get it and certainly nobody else from away will get it (well maybe some Alaskans). I moved away when I became an adult, but I understand the tradeoff. I am never sure I made the right choice.

Fragile

It seems everything is getting more fragile. Like a house of cards. Very little is robust, stout, built to last. Just in time manufacturing. Interconnected supply chains. We design things with less than 10% margin against structural failure. The elegance of fragile designs is attractive, but I don’t like living that way. I doubt many of you will understand this was a Rock & Roll discussion in the 70’s. BTO said “Not Fragile” and Yes cut an LP titled “Fragile.”

Russia should aspire to be like Canada not a great power. I would be best for Russians.

Russia should aspire to be like Canada not a great power. I would be best for Russians. Russian Leadership suffers from delusions of grandeur. I am pretty sure most Russians would be happy to live like Canadians. TEK

Media Distortion and Noise

Opinion | Hunter Biden’s laptop shows mainstream media’s own information problem — The Washington Post Opinion: Mainstream media has failed to notice its own disinformation issue By Megan McArdle The following is my work (TEK) Sorry if the link is behind a firewall. I wrote the following as a comment to that story. There is a false duality reflected in this story. Right Wing Media and Mainstream Media. What about Left Wing Media? Some of FOX…

Top 3 Indicators America is Back as a World Leader
186
10

Libby Winkler

Is not clear what kind of leadership you are talking about.

Is not clear what kind of leadership you are talking about. "These three indicators of voting equity, policing equity, and gender equity form three-pointed strategies to return the United States of America to its historical position of leadership." Certainly neither of the other two world powers demonstrate those equities. They are not essential for being a leading power. Achieving them would put us in a better position as a Moral Leader but compared to Russia and China it is clear we exceed them in voting equity, policing equity, and gender equity. Please name the powerful countries that have greater voting equity, policing equity, and gender equity than the U.S.A.
